SBS Transit Bus Captains To Sport Refreshed Look With New Uniforms
This Sunday, when you board the bus, don’t be startled if your SBS Transit Bus Captains look different. They are still the same familiar friendly faces — just dressed in brand-new uniforms!
Made from breathable, anti-wrinkle fabric suited for Singapore’s humid climate, the new uniforms feature the corporate colours of purple and orange in a lighter shade and is complemented by a sand background to exude a warmer and friendlier feel.
The Bus Captains’ shirt and blouse are styled to be worn tucked-out and designed with reflective strips for enhanced visibility and safety during low-light operations that eliminates the need for a separate vest. The pants with an elastic-waist band is trendy and offers a flexible fit to ensure all-day comfort. It is also designed with several additional functional pockets for added convenience.
The Bus Interchange staff as well as the MRT station staff on the North East Line, Downtown Line and Sengkang-Punggol LRT systems will also don new uniforms that are similar to the Bus Captains but with variations in their design such as mandarin collars and pockets. Offered in both short and long sleeve options, frontline employees have the flexibility to choose when adapting to varying weather conditions to cater to their personal preferences. Additionally, the new uniforms also come with new jackets in a sleek black design, featuring vibrant accents of purple and orange to complement the refreshed look.
SBS Transit’s Group CEO Mr Jeffrey Sim said: "This new uniform refresh is more than just a new look—it is a renewal of our commitment to our purpose and values. Every time our frontline colleagues put it on, it serves as a daily reminder of our dedication to moving passengers safely, reliably, and sustainably. It also reinforces our pledge to embody our CARES values—being Caring, Adaptable, Reliable, Eco-friendly, and Safe—as we deliver public transport services every day, rain or shine, to the passengers whom we serve.”
Senior Bus Captain Yee Yii Lin, 47, said: “I’m looking forward to wearing it this Sunday! I like it because of the lighter colour and especially the convenience of not having to wear the safety vest as the new uniform has big reflective strips included."
Marking the first uniform refresh in over a decade, this new attire is the result of a collaboration with young designers from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). The project, which began in January 2022, incorporated insights from more than 3,000 SBS Transit employees who wear them daily.
Beyond introducing a fresh look, this initiative underscores SBS Transit’s support for young local creative talent, providing aspiring designers with the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting. The NAFA designers, Ms Kartika Budiyanto, 23, Ms Shannon Cheng, 22, and Ms Karen Lee, 24, from the School of Fashion Studies who have since graduated, collaborated closely with SBS Transit employees and Union leaders to create the new design which continues to embody professionalism and yet provide functionality, and comfort.
Associate Dean of the School of Fashion Studies, Faculty of Art and Design, Mr Anthony Tan, added, "This collaboration offers our students a valuable opportunity to apply their creativity to a meaningful design challenge—reimagining uniforms for our public transport everyday heroes. The new designs seamlessly blend style with functionality, ensuring both a professional and comfortable fit for SBS Transit’s frontline staff.”
With this change in the uniform, SBS Transit has also started to reach out to social service agencies and special education schools to ensure that commuters who rely on public transport staff for assistance can continue to identify them easily in their new distinctive uniforms.
